On 31st May 1976, Sporting Clube in Dili was the venue for the vote on Timor-Leste’s integration with Republic of Indonesia. Sporting’s restaurant was recently leased to César Gaio who plans to hold an event there every year on the anniversary of the ‘Act of Integration’. This year’s event will be predominantly a Zoom meeting because of the pandemic. The meeting is being organised with the assistance of Dr. Helen Hill.
Invited speakers include Hamish McDonald, a journalist at the time who covered the meeting; Domingos Oliviera, former SecretaryGeneral of UDT and an interpreter at the meeting; Pedro Lebre, another interpreter at the event; David Webster, from Bishop’s University (Canada) and coordinator of the Timor International Solidarity Archive (TiSA); Hugo Fernandes, Executive Director of Comissão Nacional Chega!; Maire Leadbeater, of the Timor solidarity movement in Aotearoa New Zealand; and Peter Job who will address various aspects of the event. The audience will be invited to take part in the discussion.
Some background documents for the discussion were posted on the LinkedIn group of the Timor-Leste Studies Association (Dili Chapter) and are accessible to LinkedIn members here. The History Beyond Borders website, managed by Bishop’s University and supported by several other Canadian institutions, has also made available a range of interesting documents on the 1976 ‘Act of Integration’ (here).
